RELEASE DATE: Oct. 25, 2011. I was sad though when I finished it but could easily read it over and over again, Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 19, 2019. Summary: In the mid 1990s, Bill Bryson and a friend spent parts of the spring and summer hiking the Appalachian Trail.
The odd people he meets and the funny things they say. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes--and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Don't be that person. They are all either slutty or stupid or a nag. by HighBridge Audio.
It is the type of book that is worth picking up now and then to remind yourself of the strength we can build in every day moments. But this book is his best.
Definitely a book I'd recommen to new people just getting into mindfulness. Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2018. A Walk in the Woods is a different type of book. But I at lest do know enough to pack more than noodles and Snickers bars as my source of subsistence for a multi-month hike. Last year, Buzzfeed culture writer Anne Helen Petersen struck a chord with her viral article “How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation.”... A Walk in the Wood: Meditations on Mindfulness with a Bear Named Pooh offers life lessons grounded in the simple act of slowing down, observing what is around us, and being present in our lives moment by moment. It was perfect sleeping weather, cool enough to need a bag but warm enough that you could sleep in your underwear, and I was looking forward to a long night's snooze--indeed was enjoying a long night's snooze--when, at some indeterminate dark hour, there was a sound nearby that made my eyes fly open. Yet humor is where the book finds its cues—from Bryson’s frequent trail companion, the obese and slothful Katz, a spacious target for Bryson’s sly wit, to moments of cruel and infantile laughs, as when he picks mercilessly on the witless woman who, admittedly, ruined a couple of their days. Teens - in my opinion.
In "A Walk in the Woods", Bryson narrates his experiences on the Appalachian Trail which stretches 2000+ miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine, passing through eleven states and populated with all kinds of peril imaginable. But most "travel writers" don't hike over half of the AT, that's unheard of.
I am actually quite interested in the history of the Civilian Conservation corps, and they had a part in the creation of the trail. Verified Purchase. I wish someone had discouraged me from wasting my money. Travel writing does not get any better or any funnier than this.
But here's the thing. by He urges readers to use short, clear sentences and to make sure each one is healthy before moving on; notes that it’s acceptable to start sentences with and and but; sees benefits in diagramming sentences; stresses that all writing is revision; periodically blasts the formulaic writing that many (most?) A masterpiece worthy of exulting the venerable Appalachian Trail, Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2019. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Oddly enough, it has inspired me to do more walking, even though in my current life that means I have the goal of walking Grant’s Trail end-to-end and back again, a total of sixteen miles, completely paved. Going into this book, I really had no idea of what to expect from Bill Bryson. Please, I beg of you. He is almost always in over his head and finding himself in absolutely absurd situations as a result. Every female character he meets is a stereotype and he doesn't like any of them. It still bugged me that Bryson and his friend weren’t better prepared for the trip, when it’s so obvious to me how to be as prepared as possible. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaining guide you’ll find. Katz himself is a great source of humor, almost always grumbling and bringing lightheartedness to any situation, even if he doesn't mean it. Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2019. For the intended audience, this is a five-star read. I loved the movie, once I got over the fact that Robert Redford was Bill Bryson and not Nick Nolte, who imho would have been the ideal casting. This mindset qualified him to become the head person at the Campaign for the Preservation for Rural England, in this book it is evident in his belief that everybody has done everything wrong.
Also, what he chooses to describe along the way is often misguided and at times misinformed. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in). The yarn is choke-on-your-coffee funny.” –The Washington Post, “Bill Bryson could write an essay about dryer lint or fever reducers and still make us laugh out loud.” –Chicago Sun-Times, “It’s great adventure, on a human scale, with survivable discomforts, and, happily, everybody goes home afterwards.” –Times Picayune. Of course, beyond just the giggles and general absurdities that accompany the inexperienced as they take on skillful goals, A Walk in the Woods has a moral: the depletion of our natural habitat and the general disrepair of the Appalachian Trail. I started out liking this book, but the further I went along, the more obnoxious I found the author's smarter-than-thou attitude.
