I found this movie to be a great story with interesting sublots, humor, charming characters, and a nice job by some young actors who were completely authentic and likable in their roles (as they needed to be). Although it doesn't fully match the book, it was terrific to see the beautiful rugged landscape and get a sense of the "primitive" world into which the main boys were flung, far from their homes and modern amenities, trying to find meaning in their new circumstances.
I noticed some elements that I believe to be subtle messages, certain artistic tecnniques, and symbolism, but I'll leave that for the critics to discuss. Wonderful setting, special actors seen on others of the few Chinese pasterpieces that can hardly reach the west, and well, a great movie, for all tastes I suppose.

I was a little disappointed that the little seamstress was apologetic in the movie when she took control of her life and full advantage of her beauty by leaving: she was more confident and free in the novel. Nonetheless, the movie was entertaining and powerful.
