All the men in their lives are the same way. It didn't answer all the questions and left it decidedly up to the audience to figure out and is possibly a good mirroring of life itself- sometimes things aren't just resolved and we are left to our imaginations to decide how we want it to end. It pains me to dislike a movie with Frances McDormand and Catherine Keener, but I'm afraid this one made me glad I don't have a lot of money! I just don't see how ANYONE could give this more than a few stars.

Once you get through the first half-hour of this film, you've seen essentially all you need to see, plot-wise: four friends, three of whom have money, and all of whom are "stuck" in some way. If "F w/ M" were a TV series, if it fully explored the characters' lives and situations in some depth and detail, I'd be its #1 fan. In fact, I had some doubts because it had Jennifer Aniston in it, whom I had never been impressed with (not a fan of Friends at all).
Well, nothing else happened. For instance, this is a point that is repeatedly made by the main characters in the film. Listen up, guys, you might learn something. But what's most offensive is that it seems initially to advocate a subversive agenda - that wealth makes a person insulated and shallow - but winds up being about a mixed-up girl who just needs to meet the right guy and a couple of her mixed-up friends who need to divorce their asshole husbands. It's true that this movie is utterly bereft of car crashes and blood, but both my husband and I enjoyed it very much. Played with comic fire and unexpected feeling by McDormand, Jane lets out her anger by going bug-fuck when she thinks someone has cut in line ahead of her at Old Navy. Some of the film's best moments are little side jokes, wry comments made under the breath that don't really have anything to … It's a site about discovering good movies... one bad movie at a time. Wrong. Olivia (Aniston), Franny (Joan Cusack), Jane (Frances McDormand) and Christine (Catherine Keener) have been friends … Friendships are also complex dances that can end in tears and breakups.
I enjoyed some of its parts, but not the sum of its parts. Case in point: Alternate Ending was formed when three friends realized they all shared a passion for movies. The female and male characters are for the most part more interesting personalities than often found in American films. Yes, that is Jennifer Aniston tarted up as a sexual fantasy: the ooh-la-la French maid clutching a phallic vacuum hose so her boyfriend can get off when she bends over. But all of them together in this movie just made for one horrendously horrible film.
The basic story or plot isn’t all that important and you all know how much I tire of doing plot synopses. Stay-at-home mom Franny (Joan Cusack) is sustained stylishly by a sizeable family trust fund. The couple with most money, Franny/Matt (Joan Cusack/Greg Germann) seem the most happy and fulfilled. I remember a snippet of Roger Ebert's review of "My Best Friend's Wedding," when he comments how ridiculous it is that we are to believe that Julia Roberts would be having problems finding eligible men to date.
