It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 (one of three racecar tracks on the NR) and now comprises 44 acres (180,000 m2) with over 3 miles (4.8 km) of trails. The site is now heavily forested in 40 year old pines and sycamores. The track is 1 mile. I did call the office about it. The 1-mile oval Occoneechee/Orange Speedway was active from 1948-68, attracting the best stock car drivers and thousands of spectators. Yesterday I encountered several workmen in cars and trucks, going far too fast down the trails, yelling at visitors. The original track was a half-mile horse track built by Julian S. Carr for Occoneechee Farms. Prior to Carr's purchase, the farm had been called "Banks of the Eno" by farmer James Hogg, who had established a farm on the property in 1794. The 663-acre property was purchased by Julian S. Carr on April 25, 1891 from James Hogg Norwood and his sister, Margaret, for $10,000. Fun to see north Carolina history maintained for all to visit and enjoy. The park seems to be run by a grassroots organization but I could be wrong on they really don't want bikes in there. (Sir Richard Petty won the last race held here, of course!) I am however an outdoors fan and this is great.
Poplar Hill, 1890s So I assume it could happen again. Both are free, and both are mostly shaded. While piloting his airplane over the area, NASCAR founder William France noticed the former horse racing track and expanse of open land to the southwest. Non-paying spectators often climbed trees along the riverbank to watch the races. Carr's 'city house' at the time was the immense Somerset Villa, located at the southeast corner of South Dillard St. and East Main St. - a structure that he had completed 3 years prior, in 1888. It's funny how many people don't know about this place. The park is very peaceful and I've found the runners and other dog walkers to be exceptionally friendly. Occoneechee Speedway was one of the first two NASCAR tracks to open and is the only track remaining from the inaugural, 1949 season. This building does not appear in any tours yet. France moved the track to Alabama, where he had bought an 1,800-acre (7 km2) site forty miles east of Birmingham on which he built the Talladega Superspeedway. Farming was, of course, quite a bit easier if you had a great deal of wealth to fall back on. I'm not a Nascar fan but if I was this place would be a religious experience. The farm business never recovered, however, and Carr decided to sell the farm as his health declined in the early 1920s. The track was renamed Orange Speedway in 1954. There are some fun things to see along the way like the old cars and stands where spectators sat. On September 15, 1968 the track closed after a win by Richard Petty. About Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail Located near Hillsborough, NC Occoneechee Speedway was one of the first two NASCAR tracks to open and is the only track remaining from the inaugural 1949 season. Be sure to stop and read the park poster board. It's a great park just make sure you have someone riding shotgun or you are paying close attention as it's really easy to miss the entrance. I actually felt pretty threatened by one who blasted by me, hollering about how he had a "right" to be there. It was added to the National Historic Register in 2002. We met a couple on the track , the man remembered going here when he was a boy when it was a speedway. Beware. The only original remnant of Occoneechee Farm is the rubble-esque stone gate on 70, seemingly out of place with the 1940s-era houses on either side. The old bleachers and the former track, 05.25.14 (G. Kueber). It has great facts about what the speedway once was and photos of how it actually looked.
It was divided into several smaller farms, and was soon sold, shortly before Carr's death on April 29, 1924. When I called the manager (Bill) to let him know what was going on he said he gave them permission to practice there. Louise Smith became NASCAR's first female driver at the track in the fall of 1949. It's funny how many people don't know about this place. The grandstands are still visible, as is much of the mile–long oval track. The 1-mile Occoneechee Speedway was an active NASCAR track from 1949 to 1968, and it's the only surviving speedway from NASCAR's first season. By June of 1948, the track was in full use. There are some really interesting historic markers and hand painted signs. Today, this unique outdoor site allows for a diverse range of activities and is enjoyed by individual hikers, joggers and other sports enthusiasts. (Eno River Association). I'm not a Nascar fan but if I was this place would be a religious experience. I take my dog's there everyday. I am however an outdoors fan and this is great.
Unfortunately it's the only walking place I've ever felt unsafe. The Occoneechee Speedway site is now heavily forested with pines and sycamores.
