Being a fan of "Children of Men", I was very anxious for writer/director Mark Fergus' directorial debut ... especially when I found out it starred Guy Pearce and was a psychological thriller. Think of the fun Mr. Pearce could have with a pill popping modified re-make of Ray Milland’s ‘The Lost Weekend’ or Nicholas Ray’s ‘Larger Than Life’! Although he’s hardly in it, Pearce more than makes up for it. Only the young guys get hyped for the quality of work they do because they aren't quite established yet. This caused a lot of upset and for the next few weeks of the story, Guy Pearce slowly unraveled. So some viewers are sure to see that as a cheat. Told by a roadside psychic (J.K. Simmons) that he's destined to die soon (at the "first snow"), ambitious New Mexico-based flooring salesman Jimmy Starks goes through a series of reactions: disbelief, anxiety, anger, and, at last, surrender. If Christopher Walken sees the future (as he did in "The Dead Zone"), there's going to be music; there's going to be ham. From this point on the movie plays out like a bloated "Twilight Zone" episode. He shows great range and holds the whole film together with his ability to switch from cocksure arrogance to paranoid wreck and has you delighted when it comes to watching him squirm. The writers were clever enough to approach a simple philosophical question in a devious and brusque way. | Rating: 3/4 First-time director Fergus's film is more a moody, tedious anti-thriller about ineluctable fate.
