The previous weekend, Leavitt hosted a three-day fishing tournament that drew nearly 700 anglers from all over the state and beyond. It still would have had liquid water at the glaciers' bases, though, and it's not clear if the ice age happened after a lengthy warm, wet period. âPrior to this year, I was kind of like, whatever, what do they call it... itâs cyclical.

The lake had one of its least ice covered years ever, with just about 20 percent cover by the end of February. âWhatâs happening in the Great Lakes region is a small part of a bigger story,â says Lesley Knoll. Sheâd bring what little equipment she had out to the ice, perch on an overturned five-gallon bucket, and sit there for hours, tipping the nose of the rod up and down like a conductorâs baton, calling to the symphony of fish below. But the feel of itâthe clouds skidding overhead, the water changing colors below her feet, the wind swishing pastâgot locked into her brain as the essence of winter. So is the water, in many places faster than the air.
The scientists postulate that the water is extremely salty.
The data come from the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS), an instrument about the ESA's Mars Express spacecraft, which has been orbiting the red planet since late 2003.
The 2018 result was for a region called Ultimi Scopuli, several hundred kilometers from the south pole of Mars in an area of South Polar Layered Deposits, a huge bed of nearly pure water ice that stretches for over a thousand kilometers.

Itâs difficult to see the change clearly, in some cases, because thereâs huge year-to-year variation, says Jia Wang, a climatologist at NOAA who focuses on ice cover in the Great Lakes region. Some lakes in the region didnât freeze at all. But in parts of Lake Superior, the ice season has been shrinking by an average of almost a day each year for the past few decades. This is a salt, and if it got into melted water in sufficient quantities the hypersalinity could keep the water from freezing (the same reason we throw salt on sidewalk and road ice in the winter, to lower the melting point so it can melt into a liquid).
Maybe a bunch of snow falls early in the season, insulating the ice from the top and, counterintuitively, keeping it from growing quickly through the cold temperatures. Winter is integral to the culture of the Great Lakes region. Leavitt isnât alone. Respite for some, dearly held recreation for others, food, and much more.
