Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe) is a seasoned veteran in the Stasi whose specialty is interrogations. What I did enjoy about the film is the exploration of the conflict between the bohemian culture and the culture of social control. To accomplish this feat, they employee 100,000 people and rely upon twice as many other individuals who serve as informers. Still today, I am moved deeply by the powerful portrayal of human being pitted against human being solely because they have no understanding of each others’ lives. As a socialist state, East Germany functioned on the cooperation of the population in fulfilling socialist ideologies, but enforced this cooperation through surveillance. I enjoys reading your interpretation as well as the story, just watched the film and looking how this story might related to other audience and what common and different experiences of philosophical, literal interpretations we might have. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s film The Lives of Other’s (2005) is set in East Berlin during the socialist reign from November 1984, up until the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. The film turns into a suspenseful thriller with a complex and powerful moral drive. Instead, it intricately examines a Stasi investigator's own humanity, and suggests some rays of hope still shone on their own in the dark recesses of East Berlin. A good example of their strictness is the case of a Stasi staffer who tells a joke about the East German leader Erich Honecker and is eventually forced to pay the consequences. Wiesler is stunned and can only reply, "Says who?" The investigation into Dreyman ends, as does Wiesler’s career. The Lives of Others is a masterfully plotted historical and fictional drama that never bores its audience with mediocre side plots that add nothing of substance. Forty years earlier, the Stasi's job was being done by the Gestapo, which was active for a mere dozen years and employed around 45,000 agents with some 160,000 registered informants. But, my heart is a Kierkegaardian that works of true love are indeed possible. Make a choice to live freely, fully and creatively. In light of current debates surrounding global surveillance programs in the name of security, The Lives of Others serves to caution that surveillance without oversight can be abused nefariously for personal agendas, as well. Investigators are unable to find any corroborating evidence, and Sieland tragically commits suicide. Wiesler and the Stasi team bug the apartment and set up surveillance equipment in a nearby attic, and begin reporting on Dreyman’s activities. Once the playwright's apartment is wired, Wiesler and an assistant begin monitoring all of his activities. One day, the Minister of Culture becomes interested in Christa, so the secret service agent Wiesler is instructed to observe and sound out the couple, but their life fascinates him more and more. Selling a foreign language film to a UK audience can be difficult as the majority of films that are consumed here are US/UK productions or UK films. With this introduction of color, The Lives of Others not only demonstrates how West Germany had globalized with an ethnically diverse population, but also suggests that those who endured the governance of socialist East Germany simply continued their somber, inauspicious existences, but art was able to flourish and take on new dimensions of expression. We cannot imagine the swift change that happens in the last century in poverty.
