Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s film The Lives of Other’s (2005) is set in East Berlin during the socialist reign from November 1984, up until the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. The film turns into a suspenseful thriller with a complex and powerful moral drive. Instead, it intricately examines a Stasi investigator's own humanity, and suggests some rays of hope still shone on their own in the dark recesses of East Berlin. A good example of their strictness is the case of a Stasi staffer who tells a joke about the East German leader Erich Honecker and is eventually forced to pay the consequences. Wiesler is stunned and can only reply, "Says who?"
